There are a lot of mangrove trees on Sanibel Island. These are really odd looking trees that grow in the mud and have roots that are very long and tangled. The trees look like they are standing on top of the water because of the roots. There are areas that look like little islands, but they aren't, they are a bunch of mangroves growing together in the water.

The seeds of the mangrove grow on the tree into seedlings, drop off into the water, and float upright until they find an area that is shallow enough for their roots to grow.
